Love, is possibly the most sung about, written about and most misunderstood word in the English language. An idea to do a painting on this subject and explore it had been sitting in my notebook for many months. Why I did it this year and not last, I don’t really know. I guess every piece of art comes to be when the artist is ready to produce it.
While getting ideas for the painting I decided to do two things. 1/ Read Erich Fromm’s ‘The Art of Loving’ and 2/ put a request out on my Facebook page asking friends to contribute one liners that I could steal for the painting. The silence was almost deafening. Do my friends not know what love is? Were they too afraid to talk about the subject in the public domain? After further encouragement, I finally got a few replies including a wonderful one by Alex Field (who is a journalist who interviewed me recently for ArtSlant). Love is ….. the cause of my best days and my worst.
The book by Erich Fromm, a psychoanalytic classic was revealing. It managed to break love down to its various forms, explain their roles, explore it’s manifestations, both positive and negative and to conclude that when we get love right, it really is the most important verb in the dictionary.
